Deacons

The method by which the church of Jesus Christ has moved forward down through the centuries is that God selected a person to be leader (the Pastor) to serve as support to the leader and as fellow servants to the congregation. The Deacons are chosen from among the congregation to “serve the church” in the practical, spiritual, and temporal matters of that body of believers.

Within these frames of reference the Deacon is looked on as a man called and equipped by God to be a servant of the Lord in the church, whose gifts and calling are recognized by the congregation through his election, testing and ordination. He is a servant entrusted with the special responsibilities of the handling of the temporal affairs of the church including the administration of temporal relief.

A Deacons task is a spiritual task, requiring him to be filled with spirit and wisdom. In order to discharge it, a Deacon is expected to shoulder responsibilities within two broad categories.

Routinely, the church secretary notifies the coordinator of a death in the church and provides the deceased’s name, address, next of kin, and funeral arrangements if they are known at the time. Sympathy Ministry members should visit the bereaved family members to offer support and inquire as to the desire or need of the ministries service.
